Week #2

Learning Log for Week of September 7th - 11th

My favorite thing I did this week was learning about Cleopatra and King Tut.
I got a new camera this week which I am really excited about and starting taking
lots of photos of my family. I definitely had a very interesting week, filled with
lots of learning.

Homeroom:

This week I went onto Brain Pop and since I am taking a digital photography class, I looked at video about how cameras worked.  It was really cool to see how they showed how cameras are made and how they work. Brain Pop is a really cool website because it teaches you all these different things, but while you are doing them it's really fun.

Math:

This week I learned about Dividing by 4 and the Area of a Triangle.  I really like Math and Brain Pop because it teaches you different techniques that help make solving problems easier and it's fun.  This week was the first time I did a recipe all on my own, I made an Asian Chicken Salad Dressing, I did all the measurements by myself. I really like to cook and measuring cups are like fractions and sometimes I need to double or half a recipe, so I need to use math.

English/Language Arts:

I am currently attending a book club in my neighborhood. This week we meet and talked about the first book that  we read called,  A Tangle of Knots by Lisa Graff.  I really liked the book because it had a lot of creativity, magic, and mystery, but the writing style was a little different from most books that I have read. Each chapter was really short and were about a new character in the book and it told the story of that person. So often times it was confusing and you didn't find out all the information you needed till another chapter.  But in the end, I really liked the book. This week with my "Through the Wardrobe Class," we had an assignment to talk about magic and if we think it exits, I wrote this poem:

“Magic”

A poem by Emma Foutz

I saw some magic in the air
even though magic is rare

I saw it down there by the creek
Why don’t you go have a peek

It’s very thin and very tall
It’s guarded by a thick, brick wall

The color was as bright as light
I couldn’t see it in the night

I like it down there where it lies
The magic seems to just fly, fly, fly

It lights up the whole bright, night sky
It makes me want to never say goodbye

You might not believe me, but it’s there
I saw some magic in the air

Science/History:

This week for history we are learning about Ancient Egypt.  I want to do a report on history and tell about Cleopatra.  I went to the library and checked out books about Cleopatra so I could do some research to help me with my report.  I learned a lot of cool new things.  I learned that King Tutankhamen got married when he was 10 years old and he died when he was 19 and they didn't find his tomb until 1922. I also learned that Cleopatra was the last pharaoh/queen. I am excited to learn more as I am going to be Cleopatra for Halloween.

Tech:

This week for digital photography, I got a nikon camera!  I really excited about it.  I took a lot of photos of my cute baby brother Griffin and I learned about the different modes and settings on my camera.  I am excited to learn more so I can take great pictures!

Fine Arts:

I start dance next week.  I am taking Ballet because I love it!  I love it because it strengthens your leg muscles and helps you become a better athlete.  My goal this year is to get my splits down all the way.

Fine Arts:

I started Choir this week.  It was really fun!  I got to meet a couple of new people.  We started working on our Christmas songs: "Christmas in the Air" and "Snowday."  They were both really fun songs.  Both of them have solos in them and I would like to try out for solo 1 for "Christmas in the Air" because I really like to sing.
