Week #15

Learning Log for Week of December 7th - December 11th

My favorite thing this week was making an iMovie for my Narnia class with Leadership Education Academy. It was really fun making it!

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on Brain Pop. I played a game called pearl diver. The goal of the game is to find all the pearls under water in the amount of time it gives you. But you also have to make sure you don't get stung by the eel. You have to dive at the right measurements to find the pearl in the clam. It is a very fun game.

Math:

This week for math I finished my entire Delta book! I was so excited because every unit I finish I get $5 and since I finished my entire book I got $10. I finished learning about Roman Numerals. I learned that D=500 and that M=1,000. It is a fun concept to learn in math. It is like trying to figure out a fun code puzzle. I like Roman Numerals.

English/Language Arts:

This week for English and Language arts I got to make a movie about Narnia. I made it on my computer with the really fun app called iMovie. I made it with a lot of pictures from the movies. My favorite movie so far is The Lion, The Witch, And the Wardrobe. This is the Movie:

Science:

This week in science we learned more about amphibians. We learned about the amphibian web. It talks about the different characteristics of an amphibian. It was cool to learn that they are cold blooded. We learned that an Amphibian can stay in the water with out dying because it has gills. I had no idea that a frog had gills when he was a tadpole, that is so cool.

Tech:

This week for Tech I got to chose my top 10 favorite photos of the month. It was a hard decision to make, but I did it. This was my #1 favorite photo that I took of my baby brother:

Choir:

This week in my choir we did a performance for the Dickens Festival. I was preforming on the Queen Victoria stage. We got to sing in front of the Queen who was walking around the the Festival. It was really cool to have that experience because I really like to sing.

Dance:

This week for dance I worked on pirouettes and glissades. I was also working on some foot work. Since it is near Christmas time my ballet teacher, Miss Marcia, lets us dance to Nutcracker music! It is so fun. My favorite dance in the Ballet is the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy." The music is so fun to dance to. Ballet is my favorite type of Dance.

Week #14

Learning Log for Week of November 30th - December 4th

My favorite thing this week was having my friends come over to

see what our homeschool is like and learning about our science lesson.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on Khan Academy.  I helped my brother with some questions he had so he could earn some additional points and unlock a new avatar.  I also showed a friend that came over for a lesson brain pop junior and how it works and what I like about it.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson #26 that taught me about volume.  The Area for volume is length x width x height. I like volume because you get to find out things like how much water you would need to fill your bath tub and the size of a building.

English/Language Arts:

I finished my book The Horse and His Boy, I liked it a lot because it has a bit of Russian folk tale. There were different new characters and it taught me about friendship and what it means to be a good friend. Things like loyalty, trust, compassion, empathy. My assignment this week from my through the wardrobe class was to watch the movie The Chronicles of Narnia. My favorite scene in the movie was the battle of Narnia scene at the end cause it just shows how powerful the army was.

Science:

This week in science we learned more about mammals.  We talked specially about marsupials and talked about the Tasmanian Devil.  There aren't many left because people are moving into their habitat and because when some animals are killed the Tasmanian Devil they go to eat the meat and they get hit by a car.

Tech:

My digital photography class assignment was to upload our favorite ten photos from November.  I still need to turn in my assignment, but I am going to turn in photos that I took of my baby brother Griffin and also of my other brothers. My favorite thing about photography is how you get to capture the moment and have it forever.  I made 2 movies using i-movie on my family's mac computer.  I loved making the movies.  One was about friendship and the other was about the Nativity Story.  I liked being the director.

Choir:

This week in my choir we had two performances.  The first was at an assisted living center.  This one was my favorite because after the concert we got to go around and meet and shake the hands of the residents that live there and that was fun to meet them and see them smile.  The other concert was the Festival of Trees.  I really liked going so we could see all the different tress that were there.

Dance:

This week in dance I learned new turns and leaps.  I am getting excited to see the Nutcracker for Christmas and I started listening to the music and playing it on my piano.  I am working on my pointe moves because I really want to take pre-pointe next year.

Week #12

Learning Log for Week of November 16th - November 20th

My favorite thing this week was going to Aquarium and seeing the baby penguins.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on my khan academy. I worked on my math in khan academy to help me with my subtraction, addition, and multiplication. It has helped me with my long division that I have been doing in Math-U-See

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 24 and started my Lesson #25.  They are both on  Multiple-Digit Division. It is getting a little easier because I have had a lot of practice.  But it's been hard this week because Lesson #25 is 3 digit division, so the problem gets kind of large and tricky.

English/Language Arts:

This week in my through the wardrobe class, our assignment was to find out what kind of friends the 3 main characters are in the book.  This is what I researched:

The Great Friends
Shasta and Aravis are very good friends and great companions. They will help each other out. Yet, Larseleen is not a very good friend she and Aravis the two are interested in two totally different things. Larseleen is interested In beauty, fashion, and wants other people to like her. Aravis is more quiet, Independent, and helps other people. Shasta is probably the best friend. He doesn't leave someone behind even though he is shy. I think I am most like Aravis. She is Serious, Quiet and is very independent. I am most like Aravis.

Science:

This week our science we worked on shadow and light.  We talked about how shadows happen and we made shadow puppets.  We made a shark, sail boat, snail, and a cloud.  We also went to the Aquarium on a field trip for science this week.  My favorite thing about the field trip was learning about the penguins.

Tech:

This week in digital photography, I am submitted my lighting assignment.  It was hard because kept trying to take photos at the "golden hour," which is 1 hour before sunset.  So I ended up taking a photo inside at the golden hour.  I used my American Girl Dolls and set them up for the photo shoot.  I used a white poster board to help with the lighting and to see how that would affect it.

Choir:

This week in choir we are getting ready for our 3 Christmas concerts.  The first concert is going to be at a elderly center.  The next one will be at Festival of Trees.  The third concert will be a the Dickens Festival.

Dance:

This week in Dance I learned I was sick on Tuesday with the stomach flu.  So I went on Thursday and I had a sub.  I have been working on my classical ballet techniques.  I checked out a book on ballet from the library and have been reading it, I would love to be in the ballet "Swan Lake" someday.

Week #11

Learning Log for Week of November 9th - November 13th

My favorite thing this week was going on another field trip

to the Children's Curiosity Museum.

This time we took our friends with us and it was really fun.

We went to the rainforest and did the math to find out how

high we got on the ropes and it was 60' high!

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on brain pop. I learned about subtraction, addition, and measuring. I took quizzes on the measurements.  I also learned about patterns and took the quizzes.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 23 and took my test and started Lesson #24 from Math-U-See.  They are both on  Multiple-Digit Division. It is getting a little easier because I have had a lot of practice.  My goal is to get through all 30 lessons in the Delta so I can start Epsilon starting in January.

English/Language Arts:

This week in my through the wardrobe class, we had a research question about Calormen and what part of the world is most like this.   This is what I submitted:

"Calor" is Spanish and Portuguese for "Heat" which seams to suggest how the name of the warm desert country was developed.
Calormen is most like Kalorme a mountain found in the easternmost part of the world. In the land of the sun where the sun rises every dawn, and which is the tallest mountain of Arda after Taniquetill in Tolkiens lengendarium.
I have book club and we talked about A Wrinkle in Time and then I got my new book for next month, Island of the Blue Dolphins.  It is a true story and I am excited to start reading it next week.

Science:

This week our science experiment was a homemade volcano. We put baking soda, dish soap, and the water in a cup.  There was no reaction when we added these ingredients together.  But when we added the vinegar it made it erupt.  Then we watched a video about volcanos in Hawaii. We made our lava orange like the volcanos in Hawaii.

Tech:

This week in digital photography, I am still working on my lighting assignment. Now that the time has changed and it gets dark so early and some days are cloudy, it is tricky to go outside and get the photos like I use to.  So I am trying to figure out how to take good picture with the different lighting settings.

Choir:

This week in choir we started working on our song "One Bright Star." And I practiced my solos.  We are performing at a senior living center in two weeks.  And then we are performing at the Festival of Trees and then the Dickens Festival in three weeks.

Dance:

This week in Dance I learned more steps and moves in my new combination. I learned a simple combination for my recital dance that is in June, my teacher, Ms. Marcia thinks she is going to add it to our dance. We are going to start practicing our recital dance starting in December.

Week #10

Learning Log for Week of November 2nd - November 6th

My favorite thing this week was going to the Museum of Curiosity and

going to the Rainforest exhibit

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked in Khan Academy.  I earned more points and helped me with my math.  I got to do some math that I had never done before when I clicked watch video, that was really cool.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 22 from Math-U-See.  It was Multiple-Digit Division. It was hard, but I was able to get it done. I like doing the Math on Brain Pop and Khan Academy.

English/Language Arts:

This week in my through the wardrobe class, we talked about story telling and how to tell a really good story. We got to watch a video and then we had to find a fairy tale that we wanted to tell and we had to do our best to be engaging.  You had to try and use different voices as you were telling the story.  I picked Rapunzel story. We are reading the book, The Horse and His Boy.  I have book club next week and we are reading A Wrinkle in Time. I like it because it has a little bit of everything: romance, mystery, adventure, and fantasy.

Science:

This week our science experiment was "Action-Reaction," We took a dollar bill and we tried two experiments. The first was to have someone else drop the dollar bill and count how many seconds it took us to catch the dollar bill, and then the other we dropped the dollar bill and we counted how many seconds till we caught the dollar bill.  Each time we dropped the dollar bill and caught it, we were faster because our mind sent a single to our arm that we needed to catch it.  We also talked about inertia and how an object that stays at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion.  We watched a video of an experiment where they put a glass of water and then a pin tin over the glass and then set an empty toilet paper roll on top of the pie tin and then set the egg on top of the toilet paper roll.  Then the scientist backed away and used his hand to knock the pie tin off the glass. The egg dropped straight down into the water, it was awesome. I started a new program called "Tinker Crate." It comes in the mail once a month and I get to work on different things, this month I get to work on learning about bones and joints.

Tech:

This week in digital photography, I don't have an assignment due.  But I am working on my next assignment, it's on lighting.  Now that it gets darker so much earlier, I am having to see what kind of lighting works best at night. I still like taking lots of photos of my baby brother Griffin and sometimes I take photos of my other two brothers too.

Choir:

This week in choir I started practicing my solo in "Silver Bells." I got it downloaded on my mom's ipod and listening to it a lot to help me practice.  We have a concert in three weeks at the Festival of Trees, we are all getting really excited!

Dance:

This week in Dance I learned a new combination. A combination is a mini dance choreographed with different dance moves and set to music.  We also did a lot of jumps.

Week #9

Learning Log for Week of October 26th - October 30th

My favorite thing this week was designing my costumes for the White Witch and Aravis Tarkeena. I loved designing the costumes and when I grow up I want to be a Fashion Designer!

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I set up my account for Khan Academy. I learned a new skill: how to add and subtract decimals. I really enjoyed learning how to do it and master it. It was fun! I like how Khan Academy is set up with earning points and am excited to be able to change my avatar.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson #21. It was a review on rounding. It was really fun to do and learn. I took my test and am ready to take my Unit Test next week.

English/Language Arts:

This week in my "Through the Wardrobe Class," we had an assignment on designing costumes.  Here is what I did:

White Witch Costume: I named this costume "Winter Snowflake." I designed it with fabric that will keep her warm in the winter temperatures, while also having it look like something a queen would wear.  I wanted it to look like snowflakes were on her dress to match the world in winter.
Aravis Tarkheena: I designed this costume to be fit for a daughter of a God. I saw her wearing this costume at royal dances or ceremonies. I also designed it so that it will keep her warm. There are also shoes she can wear underneath her long, flowing dress. There is a sash that runs down the middle of the dress to show her nobility.

Science:

This week our science experiment was "The Five Senses." We took three bowls of water: one hot, one room temperature, and one cold.  We put one hand in the hot water bowl and the other in the cold water bowl and we had to keep our hands in the water for 30 seconds.  Then after the 30 seconds, we put our hands in the room temperature water bowl.  The hand that was in the hot bowl felt the room temperature water was cold and the hand that had been in the cold water bowl felt the room temperature water was warm.  I learned that how we perceive things is effected by our environment. And that our different senses are amazing and help us live in our world.

Tech:

This week for my digital photography class, I have been taking photos of my baby brother, Griffin, and practicing what I have learned. I am learning that when I take the photo, if it doesn't look great, to change the setting on the camera.  Or to turn lights on or off and to move around with the camera.

Choir:

This week I got my recording for my solo.  I am excited to keep practicing. I like to practice by singing  to my baby brother.  One of the songs that I am learning is called, "I hope you have a very Merry Christmas time" Choir is fun!

Dance:

This week for dance I was practicing turns, plies and glissades.  It is fun. I really enjoy dance.

Week #8

Learning Log for Week of October 19th - October 23rd

My favorite thing this week was finishing my baby cat in sewing....

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I played on the  BrainPop website.  I played a game called "Shark Fish." It asks you a question like, "When was the great wall of China built?" And then you have to eat words that are the answer to that question.  We also watched a video on fractions.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 20. It was 3 digit division.  My favorite thing about division is how it's of kind of like decoding the correct answer. The most challenging thing was learning keeping track of the numbers in columns as I was multiplying through all the numbers.

English/Language Arts:

This week through the wardrobe I designed a flag and a coat of arms for my world, "Emma Topia." Here are their meanings:

Flag: I have two different colors in my flag. The silver stands for the glass in my world as well as honor. The turquoise represents the diamonds in my word and symbolizes peace and strength because I want people to feel peace in my world as well as strength and diamonds are one of the strongest minerals. The letters E and T stand for "EmmaTopia." The circle with the diamond in the middle represents unity.

Coat of Arms: The diamond shape of my coat of arms is to represent the diamonds in my world. The blue, diamond block on the left side is representing strength and the silver, glass block on the right side represents peace. I put a motto, that looks like a ribbon, on the bottom to show that this is the world "Emma Topia's" coat of arms. The curving line in the middle of my shield represents honor and the sparks coming from the curving line represent happiness.  The interlocking circles at the top left and right of my shield represent unity in my world.

Flag:

Coat of Arms:

Science:

This week our science experiment was "cleaning pennies." We poured vinegar into a cup and mixed it with some salt until it dissolved and then dropped several dirty pennies into the cup. We watched how the salt was dissolving and how the pennies were getting clean. The dirt or residue that was on the pennies is called copper oxide. We talked about the statue of liberty and how it was a a bronze color originally and how it turned green over time.

Tech:

This week in digital photography I finished my ISO and my white balance project.  ISO is the level of light sensitivity of you camera.  If you set your ISO to a low number your camera is less sensitive to the natural light, if your ISO is high your camera is more sensitive to the surrounding light. White balance is working to get the image to look the most natural, its working with the "color temperature."

Choir:

This week in choir I found out which solo I got. I have solo one on "Silver Bells." I am also in a group with other 5th graders singing a song called, "One Bright Star." I was really happy I got a solo on "Silver Bells" because it is one of my favorite Christmas Songs.

Dance:

This week in dance we did a new stretch called pencha, pounced "pahn-shay." This is an incline stretch, it's where one leg is pushed backwards while the other leg is standing position, lean forward.

Week #7

Learning Log for Week of October 12th - October 16th

My favorite thing this week in school was trying out for my solos in choir!

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I did BrainPop with my brother. We learned about data and probability. I learned about line graphs and how you can show data. I also learned about how probability work and then we solved problems. For example: A coin has a one out of two chance of landing on heads. Probability is really fun.

Math:

This week for math I learned how to do double-digit multiplication. It was a little confusing at first, but then I got the hang of it. It is a fun way to do math even if it's a little confusing at first, it turns out fun!

English/Language Arts:

This week for my "Through the Wardrobe" Class we needed to write which Pevensie child we are most like.  This is what I submitted:

I think I am most like Susan Pevensie. She is very logical, a little stubborn, motherly, and much more serious than Lucy. I am a little motherly to my younger brothers,a little bit stubborn with things I am no sure of, and serious in new situations . Susan is actually my favorite character in the Narnia series and movies. I like archery and so does Susan. I also really like how she tries to protect her siblings, I try and do that. I think I am most like her.

Science:

This week my family and I got a book called, The Everything Kids Science Experiments Book, and each week we are going to do an experiment from the book.  This week we did the experiment "Animal Camouflage." We got 3 different pieces of colored paper and cut them out in tiny squares and them put them on a piece of paper that was one of the 3 colors we cut out. We then timed how many squares we could pick up in 7 seconds.  My brother got 9 squares and I got 10 squares. We found out that animals that are colored the same as their environment are protected from predators.  My dad showed us his camouflage military uniform he got from my uncle who is in the army. We also looked at pictures and watched a video on animals that camouflage in their environment, my favorite was the pygmy sea horse.

Tech:

This week in digital photography I worked on my ISO and White balance.  I had to take a picture outside and adjust for lighting.

Choir:

This week I tried out for my solos. My choir teacher, Miss Alison, said she really liked my voice and she asked if I wanted to try out for the big part in "Silver Bells." So I tried out for that solo and I can't wait to hear my results.  I also tried out for my other solos, "Christmas in the Air" and there was a try out for another song that no one really wanted to try out for and Miss Alison asked if anyone wanted to try out for it, so I raised my hand.

Dance:

This week in Dance I only had class with Miss Marcia, since it was fall break on Thursday.  We did glissade, which are like tiny leaps in the air. We also worked on our shasma, where we leap in the air and change positions of our feet.

Week #6

Learning Log for Week of October 5th - October 9th

My favorite thing this week was starting my sewing class.

I am really excited to start working on my baby cat and

making more new and exciting projects!

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom my brother and I went onto Brain Pop and learned about fractions.  We played a game about fractions called Pearl Driver, it's a game where you have to dive down to find the pearls. You dive down the measurements it tells you to to find a pearl. We both really liked it!  I go to use the fractions when I made a sauce to go with our pot stickers we had for dinner one night, so learning fractions really helped me!

Math:

This week in Math I did my Unit #16 which was dividing with a reminder. I also did Unit #17 which was multiplying up and down.  I liked doing the multiplying up and down because it was fun to learn a new technique.

English/Language Arts:

I got to write a letter to C.S. Lewis for my through the wardrobe class.  I also read chapters 1-8 in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I also started working on my presentation about mythological creature I am presenting next week.  I choose to do mermaids. Here is my letter to C.S. Lewis:

October 7, 2015
Dear Mr. C.S. Lewis:
I am writing to you to thank you for writing the Narnia series. I really enjoy reading them and am excited to finish the entire series. They are full of all kinds of magic, mystery, and adventure that makes me want to keep reading. I love the characters, the setting, and plot.
One of my favorite parts of the books are the characters. I love how Lucy is funny and especially adventurous, like when she discovers that the wardrobe leads to Narnia.  I also love the fawns because they are very kind. I also like how the White Witch is described because it makes her sound very wicked and scary.
I love the setting in the series.  I enjoy the adventure of being in London and then going to the country and then discovering Narnia.  I like how Aslan created Narnia by singing and how he protects Narnia. I like the way Narnia sounds and seems so magical.
The plot in the Narnia series is very exciting.  I loved how the main lesson is kindness to all. When Lucy first meet the fawn, that was a kidnapper for the white witch, but decides to becomes friends with her and protected her from the white witch.
Thank you again Mr. Lewis for the Narnia series!
Sincerely,

Emma Kathleen Foutz
Science:

My favorite thing I did this week was to watch one of my favorite science programs, Nova, on PBS.  This week they did a show on finding the last city of Stone, called Petra.  Petra was a lost city until in 1812 when Johann Burckhard discovered it. The most famous building was behind a narrow cave, it was carved into a giant rock with chisels. I learned about how they had an underground water system that was getting water to Petra from a water system 5 miles away.

Tech:

This week in my digital photography class I took pictures when my family and I went on a hike up the canyons. I took pictures of the leaves and stone rocks.  It was later in the evening, so I had to use my flash sometimes and I used my zoom which was really nice.  I also started a sewing class this week, I am so excited about it!  I learned how to operate the sewing machine and that you change the different presser foots and how to change the bottom bobbin and how you thread the top thread through the needle.  How to stitch zig zag lines and straight lines.  My first project is making a baby cat.

Fine Arts:

On Tuesday night I have Miss Marcia as my teacher.  We first work on our stretches and then we do our leaps and bar work.  In years past we work on a Halloween dance, so I am hoping we will start working on one soon.

Fine Arts:

This week for choir I signed up to try out for 2 solos. One of them is "Silver Bells" and the other one is "Christmas in the Air." Next week I will try out for them and I hope I get a part!

Week #5

Learning Log for Week of September 28th - October 2nd

My favorite thing we did this week was learning about the water cycle and doing the experiment. I really enjoyed learning about the different steps and how they work

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom my brother and I went onto BrainPop Jr.and watched video's on mass, kilograms, weight , height, and graphs. We took the quizzes on all of them with the setting on easy at first and then we changed it to hard. It was really fun and we got pretty good scores on most of them, either 4 out of 5 or 3 out of 5. I liked the quizzes.

Math:

This week for math I learned about dividing with reminders. I learned that for example when you divide with a problem like 5 into 17, you will always get a remainder because 5 does not go into 17 equally. Remainders are very interesting math.

English/Language Arts:

This week for my "Thorough the Wardrobe class" with Leadership Education Academy,  I made Turkish Delight. This treat is mentioned in the book The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe. Turkish Delight is a kind of gummy treat. We made them with orange and lemon juice and then cooked the sugar/water mixture with the orange and lemon peel.  I cut them into squares and rolled them in powdered sugar. I started the The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe and read chapters 1-4.

Science:

This week we talked more about the water cycle and actually made a science experiment.  We took a zip lock bag and drew on it the water cycle and then filled water in the bottom of the zip lock bag and dyed the water blue.  We tapped it to a window and watched it for a few days to see the water cycle in action.  We also did reports on the different clouds, mine was on Cumulonimbus clouds, I presented it to a small group. We also made a craft out of paper and cotton balls to show what the different types of clouds look like.

Tech:

I practiced taking photos on my camera.  I want to journal the different field trips that we take in family school and especially of my baby brother.  I took my camera to the park and took different shots on different modes and settings. My favorite photo that I took was of a apple in painting.

Fine Arts:

This week in dance I worked on my technique of pirouettes.  I also worked on my splits, I want to be able to get into the splits club.  The last thing I worked on was my ABC's, this is where you use your foot to draw the ABC's to warm up your foot.

Fine Arts:

This week for choir I learned a new song, it is called the "Jingle Way Melody."  It's a few Christmas songs mixed into one.  I also got my uniform this week for our Christmas performances, I am really excited!

Week #4

Learning Log for Week of September 20th -25th

My favorite thing I did this week was play my new educational game Minecraft. I built a world called "EmmaTopia." It was really fun, my world has an underground Glass Palace and a Glass Skyscraper.

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom, I went onto BrainPop Jr. to help my little brother. I also wanted to see what he was learning. He showed me a game that he liked called "Construct A Sourus." It was a cool game for Jr's to play and it shows how dinosaurs looked and lived. The game was actually pretty cool.

Math:

I learned how to find the area of a trapezoid and how to read and write Millions. I learned that the area of a trapezoid is base 1 plus base 2 divided by 2 times height. My goal is to get thru 2 units a week.

English/Language Arts:

This week for my class I built my Minecraft imagery world called "EmmaTopia."  In my word I have animals that I take care of and it is very peaceful in my world.  I also finished Magician's Nephew. I am excited to start my next book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Science:

After learning about the water cycle last week. We went to the park one day and talked about the different clouds in the sky.  We laid down on the grass and looked up at the sky and named the different clouds of cumulous, stratus, and cumulous nimbus clouds.  The stratus clouds moved the fastest in the sky.

Tech:

In my digital photograph class I finished my modes and settings assignment.  I took the same photo of a tree several times, but each time I changed a setting or a mode on my camera. I took it on paintings mode, black and white, and portrait mode.  My favorite was the painting mode.

Fine Arts:

This week for dance I got some homework from my ballet technique teacher.  I am to practice my stretching, my ABC's with my feet, and my splits.  I also worked on my pirouette and shanay turns.

Fine Arts:

In choir we practiced all 4 songs. We are singing Silver Bells, I want a "Hippopotamus for Christmas", "Christmas in the Air," and "Snow day." I want a solo on Silver Bells because I really like that song.

Week #3

Learning Log for Week of September 14th - 18th

My favorite thing we did this week was learning about Geography. We learned about the atmosphere of the Earth. We learned that we wouldn't be able to survive without water, air, and protection. We also watched a video that was made by NASA who sent out the spaceship, Gemini, that sent back amazing footage of the Earth

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom, I went onto BrainPop and watched a couple of videos on Ancient Egypt, because I'm doing a report on Ancient Egypt for History. I watched a video on Cleopatra, Pharaohs, and mummy making (mummification). I learned a few more things about Cleopatra that I didn't know. I also learned about the Pyramid of Power and that the meaning of Pharaoh means "great house."

Math:

This week for math, I learned how to find the area of a trapezoid. It is base 1 plus base 2 divided by 2 then times Height. I like math because learning the different facts and formulas help you in your daily life, including a grocery store.  An example would be if you want 4 jugs of milk and they each coast $2.00 you would times 2 and 4 and get 8. So you would need to spend $8.00.

English/Language Arts:

This week for my, "Thorough the Wardrobe Class," with Leadership Education Academy. My homework was too read The Magicians Nephew chapters 1-10, and to answer a research question on "What time period did the book take place and what was significant about this?" So I typed up a little report on why I thought it was significant. Something that was in my report that i didn't know about before, was that it took place in the summer of 1900 in London. The book is significant because it is like a map that guides us when we're lost. Without "The Magicians Nephew" we would be lost.

Science:

This week for science I learned about the Earth's Atmosphere.  The Earth's Atmosphere gives us air, water, and protection.  The air allows us, animals, and plants to breath, which means we can live.  We talked about the water cycle and how it works: first water it goes from evaporation, to condensation, and then to precipitation. The atmosphere protects us from the sun burning us up during the day and keeps us from freezing at night.
Tech:

Fine Arts:

This week I started dance.  I am in a ballet class with two teachers.  My Tuesday class teaches my dance routines and my Thursday class teaches me technique.  This year a class is 90 minutes long instead of 60 minutes and I like this because it gives me longer time to practice.  I started running daily to help strengthen my muscles for dance.

Fine Arts:

This week for choir I learned two new songs.  The first one was "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" and "Silver Bells."  I really like Silver Bells and I want to try out for a solo for this one.
